Common questions before you install
Do I need a GS1 Company Prefix before I install?
Yes. GS1 Assistant uses your GS1 Company Prefix to assign valid barcodes. The app doesn't sell or generate its own codes. If you don't have a prefix yet, purchase one from your local GS1 member organization. US merchants can also purchase directly through the app.
Will this fix my Amazon or Google Shopping GTIN rejections?
If rejections are caused by invalid, mismatched, or missing GTINs, yes. Amazon and Google validate barcodes against GS1's global registry. GS1 Assistant assigns codes from your own prefix and checks them in real time.
What's the difference between UPC, EAN, and GTIN?
They're the same numbering system at different lengths. UPC is 12-digit (North America). EAN is 13-digit (Europe and global). GTIN is the umbrella term. GS1 Assistant handles all of them.
Does it work with GS1 organizations outside the US?
Yes. Direct API integration is available for GS1 Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, and Brazil. All other regions are supported via export files.
What happens to my barcodes if I uninstall the app?
GTINs already assigned stay in Shopify's barcode fields. Uninstalling doesn't remove or change your product data.
My products already have barcodes. Can I still use GS1 Assistant?
Yes. The app scans existing barcodes and shows validity status. You can bulk-unassign invalid ones and assign GTINs from your own prefix.
Is this different from buying cheap barcodes online?
Yes. Reseller barcodes aren't registered to your company. Marketplaces check ownership—mismatched GTINs get rejected. GS1 Assistant only uses codes from your own GS1 Company Prefix.
